Suppliers are reluctant to sell at low prices, and in-plant inventory of primary lead continues to accumulate [SMM Weekly Review of Primary Lead Inventory]

Published: Aug 15, 2025 16:23

It is understood that on August 14, the inventory of primary lead at the in-plant inventory of the main delivery brands was 8,300 mt, an increase of 1,400 mt WoW.

Recently, the production of primary lead smelters has been relatively stable, and suppliers have been shipping goods according to market conditions. During this period, lead prices surged and then pulled back, and the shipping enthusiasm of some smelters and suppliers slightly declined. The discount of quoted prices narrowed during this period, with the mainstream production areas' quoted prices narrowing from a low of a discount of 200-150 yuan/mt against the SHFE lead 2509 contract at the beginning of the week to a discount of 150-80 yuan/mt at the factory. The inventory at smelters' in-plant inventory increased cumulatively WoW. In addition, the delivery of the SHFE lead 2508 contract ended this week, and the supply of spot market goods in circulation is expected to increase next week, which may make it more difficult to ship cargoes self-picked up from production site. It is expected that there will still be a slight increase in the inventory at smelters' in-plant inventory.

Pre-holiday stockpiling by downstream enterprises had largely concluded, and a few had already entered the holiday period, completely suspending procurement. Next week, secondary lead smelters will enter a concentrated wave of production halts and holidays, resulting in sluggish trading activity in the spot market. Offers for spot refined lead orders were sparse, with prices moving in line with the market.

Sluggish Transactions in Domestic Secondary Crude Lead Market, Prices at 15,250-15,400 Yuan/mt
The domestic secondary crude lead market experienced sluggish transactions. As of February 6, 2026, the ex-factory tax-exclusive offers for domestic secondary crude lead stood at 15,250-15,400 yuan/mt. Downstream refined lead and alloy smelters gradually entered the holiday period, showing weak stockpiling willingness. Overseas lead ingot suppliers basically halted transactions with China due to poor consumption in the Chinese market, with only some previously concluded shipments maintaining normal in-transit transportation. The trading atmosphere in the secondary crude lead market will continue to weaken next week.
